I'm a designer who is fascinated with Science. Somehow as a complete amateur I believe that obsessive consumption of sites like http://www.physorg.com and wikipedia I can train myself to spot solutions to man's ever growing needs. Or problems. But that depends on how you look at things. And in an effort to remember my hair-brained schemes and with the view to possible feedback I'm going to start posting them.

MAD IDEA 1: Mouse Drive

An ion thruster can propel a space ship through space using tiny but consistent force to steadily increase velocity of said spaceship through a vacuum. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ion_thruster

Your limitation is how much gas you can put on board as fuel.

Solution 1:

You can attempt to harvest the vast amounts of gas in space.

But it is a bit haphazard as to where these clouds are and at what density.

Solution 2:

You use mice.

That turn wheels to get food thereby generating electricity to power the drive.

Droppings fertilize plants. Urine is distilled into water. Residue becomes fuel/fertiliser.

Plants make oxygen and food. Food is harvested. Food feeds mice as reward for turning wheels.

If perfectly managed the system could carry on for quite some time.

A micro version of the human condition really.

DISCLAIMER:

I don't really want to make a mouse drive. And would have ethical issues with putting mice into space to live in a micro self sustaining environment. Even if it simulated the perfect mousey nirvana. it would be Cruel and Wrong.

Unless of course we could speak to mice. We brought it up as if in casual conversation. They got really really excited.

And the Mice volunteered.

P.S.

I first read about ion thrusters many years ago so my knowledge was shaky to begin with. After reading the wiki entry myself it seems that grid degradation is more of an issue than fuel limit. So in addition to my above proposal I add spiders that weave new grids daily. And cockroaches to feed them. And that's all I can think of for now.

A nice Redbull microsite. Nicely styled but falls short in terms of actual game. As a viral piece it does the job but I can't help feeling that a lot of work was done for .. nothing. If you make an avatar you expect to be able to interact with others with it. I look forward to more immersive games in the future. Brief dips into interactive imagination. Or brand sponsored (with branding applied with a subtle hand) yet able to take on a life of their own through the interactions of the players and the environment.

From a cursory glance this seems to be another example of how online games are advancing.

The future of gaming as I see it involves no consoles, a subscription or pay-per-play service and is accessible anywhere.

Waiting for a bus in West Hampstead we found an unlikely travel companion – a box of Transport for London surveillance tapes. Some of them seemed to be taped over some of them appeared blank. HOPEFULLY these tapes were abandoned as defunct media and some employee thought "Great free tapes!". In the light of all the recent data losses by various government departments, the idea of surveillance footage lying around makes me feel a little uncomfortable.

I found this bin with my sister and her seven month old kiddo in a park in St John's wood in London. It's amazing! Why can't everything be designed this way.. although there are issues to me of feeding animals trash it just makes it all fun! Perhaps more fictional characters.. or robot looking bins.. what councils would lose making more expensive bins they would certainly gain with less trash being around. Make it fun people! Everything! ooops! I'm in london and for a while it seems.
I'm excited but unfortunately feeling very holidayish...

and have images and flickerings of memory of all the people I've found over the past while.. happy memories and amazing people and friendship groups it would take a lifetime to acculate. I miss and will miss sorely before I settle firmly into This.

life washes over you and cleans you and dirties you all at once... it makes you feel fresh and vibrant and allows you so summon the innefable and drain yourself all at once. It is and shall remain an enigma.. that can only be responded to with a wry smile and a small shake of the head.

aaaah I hate leaving this place..

I resigned this morning form Kingjames RSVP where Jenny Ehlers has been a mad,kind and fantastic boss.
I made good friends and good work and was able to engage in dialogue about work in a constructive and passionate way that I doubt I'll find elsewhere. Well.. basically Jenny and I actually argued the merits of a job and fought to make it good even if we disagreed.. or if the client was clueless and would settle for shit..

So if there are any good experienced graphic designers out there looking for a great place to work in amazing Cape Town South Africa, get hold of Jenny at Kingjames..

A strange pursuit really. Keep your diary in a virtual space so all who chance upon it can read it.
A published narcissism. Like catching a piece of paper on a windy day and finding it to be someone's diary pages.

hmm.. This gives me an idea for an art project actually. Chain a big diary somewhere public and document what happens to it. Would people write in it? Would they draw? Would they deface it or try and steal it?

Or because I stupidly wrote this idea here will it be stolen, transformed and exhibited?

I suppose blogs work, like all successful internet content works, when it's a journal or information source for the like minded..

Thomas the tomato swayed in the wind on his mother plant, Matilda. The sun baked down on him. He felt his tan deepening. He no longer felt so green. He was becoming a seasoned seedy thing. A veteran of the vine. A few of his compatriots had fallen already. He couldn't get a clear view (they were very far down), but Thomas assumed they were happy. They were quite still and seemed every more slouchy as if in great relaxation. Matilda always replied to questioning: "Well darling they're all brothers and sisters for me."

This always puzzled Thomas. Weren't they all HIS brothers and sisters? On Further questioning Matilda would only reply: "Beware the birds. and the worms. and stop talking. You're a tomato!"

Thomas never did become a brother or sister bush. He and a few chili friends became a very good arabiatta sauce. They were briefly aware of a greatly MUMBLING rolling around them. This turned out to be from the sea of Durum Wheat that had become Penne.

"It is GOOD!" was proclaimed by Ms Gladstone of Emery crescent in West Stanformoot on consumption of this meal. She suffered horrid heartburn all through that night. And phoned her friends in the morning to tell them about it.

Our place is found. A 100 year old buildinging subdivided into five units with a mad eccentric advocate landlord hellbent on making the strangest three story all massive old beam construction known to mankind. Still waiting for tam's stuff to come down so on a blowup mattress at the moment which is strange to say the least. Beautiful fireplace and a balcony on tam n I's level looking out over the mountain. A happy mad bohemian tower that is already filling up with hopes dreams and very strange found objects..

Thursday morning. Humming a tune from Magnetic Fields 69 love songs... shmaltzy band but fantastically tongue in cheek.
The studio is quiet the usual suspects are missing. The normal warfare of elastic bands fruit and basically anything that can be used as a projectile is absent and slightly disturbing.
